Football anyone? [off-topic]

Off-topic - 21 comments

FIFA Worldcup - What is your take on it?This is rare folks. We have an off-topic thread!!!

Since, the next football world-cup is not until next version of Excel and since, I find myself watching a lot of it these days, I thought why not fool around on a Friday with an offtopic discussion?!?

So here it goes, what are your favorite teams / players in FIFA World Cup 2010?

I will go first…

I am not a fan of football. If I want to watch TV, I just watch some comedy. But football world cups have always fascinated me. I remember following them since I was in 8th class (1994). Last time when the world cup happened (in 2006), I was in induction training for my first job after MBA. So as you can guess, we hardly paid any attention to the training stuff. But as strange as my addiction to world cup football is, I hardly remember anything about it as soon as it ends.

So, naturally when the FIFA world-cup 2010 began, I had no clue about what the teams are or how well they are stacked up. I read a few reviews of teams (here is one that is funny) and found that forming an un-informed opinion is probably as good.

After watching the teams play during group and 2nd stages, now I know which teams to root for.

Here are my favorite teams (in the order I like them):

Argentina: I like the way they have played so far. Their team seems to make football enjoyable, fun experience. (Although, for no specific reason, I am annoyed at the sight of Maradona as their coach)

Brazil: Ok, they won it 5 times already and play dominating, powerful and fun football. So, naturally I root for them. Also, their coach, Dunga looks like a calm, level headed guy.

Germany: They struggled a bit in group stages, but recovered fantastically towards the end and beat England with superior play in 2nd round. I am really looking forward to Germany vs. Argentina this weekend.

And these are my favorite players so far:

Drogba: What if his team (Ivory Coast) is eliminated. He seems like a passionate player.

Messi: I like the way he and other Argentinian forwards come together to score goals (although he is yet to score big).

Robinho: Football is more fun when you jiggle the ball, hoodwink your opponents and make it look like ballet. Robinho seems like he has potential for that.

What about you?

Tell us what teams you are rooting for, which players you like to see win, how you feel about the whole vuvuzela noise in the background?

Go and comment, like now. Because, next offtopic discussion could be in 2014.

Shameless Excel Tip:

Ok, it seems cruel to not have an excel tip even on an offtopic discussion. So here it goes.

  • Press CTRL+W to close current excel workbook

Come on, it is a Friday, what else do you want to do than closing the damned workbook and going out already?!?

Useless bonus question:

How about adding a vuvuzela button your next excel dashboard? Run a little macro on open play the sound that 23-bees-make-when-they-quarrel. Fun, isn’t it?

PS: Here is a collection of FIFA World Cup Spreadsheets if you are more in to that sort of thing.

    2. Argentina

    favorite players:
    1. Messi (Arg) [so far]
    2. Xavi (SP)
    3. Ozil (Ger)
    4. Iniesta (SP)

    Cheers!

  2. Ivan says:

My favorite team is Spain… well, maybe it's because I'm Spanish 😛

We have some problems at the beginning but now it seems that we are playing much better now, still not as well as we played at the european championship but we're still warming up 😛

Best player? I like Iniesta a lot and Villa as well. It's a pitty that Torres is not in a very well shape.

And what if he is the biggest diver in the game?

Spain would beat his team if they were still in it.

    <>

I guess it doesn't matter that they score goals that they know are off-side,a nd pressuries the referee when they think he might not allow it.

Spain will beat them, the defence is poor, the keeper is crap.

    <>

Yeah, nothing like a lot of pointless theatrics rather than penetrating. Tailor made for Man City.

Spain will beat them while Robinho does a dozen step overs before falling over the ball.

    Try again

@Ivan ... Torres is not in a very well shape.

But interestingly, they showed they had options on the bench against Portugal, and he is still a handful. No other team I have seen except Argentina can say the same, and their defence is poor.

  6. Martin says:

    UUUUHHHHH !!!! What a topic !!!!!

like you Chandoo, I am not a big fan of futbol, but being Argentinean, well, there's nothing you can do to avoid it....

there's no question for me, and I cannot be objective, and don't want to either !

    VAMOS ARGENTINA !!!!!!!

  7. dan l says:

My favorite football team is the Chicago Bears.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKQ1F1Qx4vo

    They are ridiculous.

Ok. I really tried hard on this whole World Cup thing. But it's really tough for Americans to get into this stuff for the following:

-Team USA sucks. I mean really? Whad they do? Go 1-1-1 before being obliterated by....Ghana? Seriously? You guys got beat by Ghana? WTF? Ghana?

-What's with the refs? We're told the refs have been bad---like very bad---in this years world cup. I don't really know the rules, so I have no idea:)

-What's up with the guys who take a dive? Is that like standard practice?

-Announcers? Look, I'm not a jingoist proto-typical American, but the booth coverage was often difficult to understand for me. I know I know. You want to throw stuff at me. But give me your skype number, and I'll do play by play on a baseball game for 2 hours for you. We'll see if my Chicagoese comes through for ya or if you're interested in sitting through another game with me talking about dis, dat, dese, and dose.

-Our Goalie Was a Candy Ass - Seriously. Duncan Keith of the Stanely Cup winning Chicago Blackhawks paid 7 teeth to eat a hockey puck. He was back out on the ice 5 minutes later. Literally. This dolt just got spikes on his arm and he walked around gimped up for the next 2 weeks. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if he was just another nameless, faceless guy on the team, but he's supposed to be some big 'face' of the team.

What's really bizarre is the booya network has done everything they could to ramrod the world cup down our throats over here. Mark my words, ESPN's parent companies will run stories telling us how great the ratings were and how the US is all in love with soccer, but don't buy it. Nobody here cares. At all. The moment something even remotely more interesting came up

No beef. It's just that without any real talent here in the US and no supporting culture of analysts, announcers - it's just not for me.

  8. Eduardo says:

    Chandoo loved this topic.

    I love football.

Right now my family and I are preparing ourselves to see the game of Brazil against the Netherlands.

And I sincerely hope that Brazil will win the rout.

Robinho To top of them! To BRAZIL over them.

  9. Andy says:

Well, I had called Brazil to win the Cup, but they just went out 2-1 against the Netherlands! Here's hoping for a Netherlands - Paraguay final!

  10. Martin says:

Too bad for Brazil... really wanted the 4 Latinos (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) to be on semifinals.....

  11. Paul says:

I'm from Argentina too. So I hope Argentina will win the World Cup.
My other favourite is Brasil, but they just lost against Netherlands. Sorry for them.
The best player is Messi, but the player that play with the courage and heart is Carlos Tevez!!!!

  17. Chandoo says:

Ok, after watching the QF and first Semi Final I have few more favorite players...

Sneijder: for his raw skill and energy
Schweinsteiger: Superb defense and mid-field skills

And of course, I am rooting for a Germany vs. Netherlands final.. lets see 🙂

  18. Ivan says:

@Chandoo. If you have watched the second SF now you know why Spain is my bet. We've played the best football of all the championship and we're on the final for the first time ever!!!

  19. Miguel says:

    Chandoo,
you must improve your football skills. 😉

Both Netherlands and Germany have been defeated by Spain, the new world champion !!!

  20. paco says:

    Chandoo,
    you are awesome in Excel,
but you have no future as a football guru.

    greetings from Spain.
