What is Power BI?

Considered to be one of the fastest growing technologies in the world of data, Power BI is an incredible software to collect data, model it, analyze it, visualize and publish your work – all with ridiculous ease. Think of  Power BI as a natural extension to Excel based reporting with built-in capabilities to publish to mobile phones, web and everyone in your organization securely.

What can Power BI do for me?

I won’t tease. Check out below gallery to see some of the reports you can create and skills you will pickup in this course. It is #AWESOME.

Is it good for me?

Let’s be honest. Power BI is awesome and all, but not everyone can hop on the bandwagon. It is suitable for people in these situations.

  • Analyst of most kinds
  • Business Intelligence Professional
  • Report writers, story tellers
  • Managers and executives who need to build reports
  • Self-employed consultants
  • Data People
  • Anyone Power BI curious

You need below skills to successfully use Power BI:

  • Decent understanding of business and reporting concepts (ie are you building some reports in Excel or other tools already?)
  • Beginner to intermediate level of Excel (while you won’t be using Excel in Power BI, knowing things can simplify your work)
  • Passion to learn new things (Power BI has a decent learning curve)

and oh yeah, you will also need:

  • Free Power BI Desktop software (you can download this from powerbi.microsoft.com)
  • Optional Power BI online account (this will let you publish things on web etc.)

In this play date, I assume that you have little or zero experience with Power BI and build from that level. At the end of this program you will be able to create awesome reports with the program. That is my promise.

Chandoo - I am undecided. My company is not buying the paid version of Power BI, so if I have the free version can I still share what I create with my coworkers?

    • Chandoo says:

@Shair: You can share your work with colleagues thru public share and embed options with the free powerbi online account. Keep in mind, anything you share is accessible by entire world, not just your colleagues. You can also use Power BI Desktop to create PB workbooks and ask your colleagues to view them on their Power BI Desktop.

  2. Wouter says:

  3. Nisha Batel says:

  4. Paulo Cohen Lemos says:

    Hello Chandoo

I am just a regular excel user with just a few knowledge of excel formulas, I have no programming skills.
Am I eligible to have this course ? will I understand it or is it too complex and it is "more" recommended for experts ?

Another question is, having the Power BI course will I be able to apply the excel tricks learned and perform like Power BI environment or, do I need to have the Microsoft Power BI license and pay monthly fee to use it ?

    Thank you
    best regards

    • Chandoo says:

      Hi Paulo,

Prior Excel experience (beyond basics) is not necessary for Power BI. What you do need is, "an understanding of Business reporting needs". You can apply the ideas in Power BI desktop software for free. If you want to share the reports with others, then your company must get Power BI license for users.

  5. Gorilla ROI says:

Is there a prerequisite you recommend before diving into Power BI? Or is this class good to go for absolute beginners?

    • Chandoo says:

Hi there... Power BI course is designed for beginners. You do not need prior knowledge of other tools. But having a good understanding of business analysis and reporting is useful.
