Worksheet view weirdness - help please!

So I managed to do something weird to the view of one worksheet in my spreadsheet. I never saw it before, I have no idea how I did it, and I can't figure out how to make it go away again. It's some sort of scroll bar freeze control. I spent an hour Googling all sorts of permutations of likely-sounding words and got nowhere. So I'm trusting someone here will know the answer. I attached two screenshots.

If I click on the minus in the firstscreenshot, the scroll bar "locks" at the current position and effectively hides all columns to the left; the view then looks like the second screenshot. If I click on the plus in the second screenshot, the worksheet "opens up" and the scroll bar works as normal. Either way, I have those four little boxes numbered 1-4 on the LHS, and the line with +/- at the RHS, between the top of the data and the bottom of the formula bar. And I want them please to go away ...

Does anyone know how I managed to do this, and even more importantly, how I can undo it again? It's benign, but infuriating!

TIA,

Andy

Welcome to the forum!

On the Data Tab, there is a command group called Outline.

Click Ungroup; then, if a dialog box pops up, click Columns, OK.

Thank you!

Nearly a perfect answer. I did what you suggested but the "scroll bar control" was still there. But it seemed clear you had diagnosed the problem correctly, so I investigated the little down arrow on the right of Ungroup, to open the Ungroup menu. Lo! Clear Outline appeared, and when I selected that, job done.

Thank you so much, eibi. I knew it had to be a simple fix, because the thing appeared out of nowhere in the first place, so I figured it had to have been a random typo-turned-keyboard-shortcut. In which case, it had to be equally easily undone ...

Now I'm wondering what this thing can actually be used constructively for. More homework required!

Its funny as I remember the day in 1996 when I found that by accident and also couldn't undo it

Grouping is used for allowing summary tables to be displayed showing summary data only and then by clicking the + it shows what dat5a makes up each line within the table

It can also be used for setting up input / assumption pages where different sections can be expanded/condensed as required

and many similar uses

1996!? LOL ... and there was me thinking it was some new-fangled feature! It obviously made quite an impression on you at the time. Thank you for the helpful hints about how to use it by design rather than abuse it by accident.

It can be used with the Short Cut keys

Select the Columns or Rows
Alt+Shift+Left/Right Arrows to Group/Ungroup

We have obviously done that by accident somehow 20 years apart?
