When should we use ActiveX vs Form Control option buttons?

I have a worksheet that it's best to use ActiveX option buttons after a certain amount of FormControl option buttons because Excel can't support that many FormControl options, but I don't know the extent to which this may be true.

My sheet has 125 option buttons at the moment, and before I removed some, it was becoming VERY buggy and would crash and freeze up for no apparent reason. I haven't used any ActiveX controls yet, because frankly I don't know how / what the difference is.

Any advice more than welcome!

Hi Andrew ,

I don't think it is the option buttons which are making your workbook buggy ; in fact Form Controls are much more reliable than ActiveX controls ; if you check out opinions on the Internet , you will see that most of the experts favour Form controls over ActiveX controls.

If you can upload your workbook , we can check.

Good article but unfortunately it doesn't address the question of how many form controls are safe to use before causing Excel any problems.

Is this just a myth? If so why did it start crashing my excel when I used too many, and Excel stopped crashing when I removed some?

I would upload my workbook but I don't think I'm allowed. It's a two man operation here and I'm not sure if the guy I work for is comfortable sharing my work. I've been saving a new version every day though, so if necessary I can ask him if it would be ok to send you guys an older version (where I had over 150 option buttons) and you can see what I did, where deleting a bunch of them stops Excel from freezing.

If your using 150 option buttons I'd be thinking that you need to rethink the structure of your workbook

We've put about 6 months of thought into it as a developing process, and it does exactly what we need it to do thus far. As of now, a logical series of questions takes the user down one of several paths, so nobody will ever have to answer more than 10 questions, however this was the best (and only) way to really meet the goals we had. There are regulatory requirements that necessitate this level of thorough checking, but we're making it fun and easy. Still lots of work ahead of us but it's ending up a really fun and deep project :)

Infact we're pushing excel to the limits in so many interesting ways that I've uncovered a handful of very rare and unique bugs. Let's see if I can get the most out of her without breaking her haha.
