violin plots in Excel

Hi the forum,

I recently heard about violin plots. As my friend Google provides no information about it (except Wikipedia), I would knock on the door of this forum.

Should a reader have an EXCEL file that would allow me to understand this technique?

Until now, you'll find more regarding MatLab or Lattice C than Excel, I guess.

The first three are MatLab related and Python derived from MatLab, tool with which happened to be developed this kind of plots.

But the last one from Jon Peltier is about Excel, even I don't know if it's exactly suitable for your needs.

I haven't checked any of them as deep as to learn what are they doing, but if you do (as for the output, for example) just advise and with a little of time I'd give a look to it: no problem neither with Matlab nor Python (with this last one, actually many but little or not so big) so if the implementation is short enough and easily Excelable I don't promise you anything but maybe I could give a try to convert it to Excel.

Specifically which part of the Violin plot are you after, The Curvey outside bit or the internal Box plot ?


Do you have a set of data you'd like us to tackle ?

I have been searing the web for entire week (last one) but unable to find how to evaluate and plot a Kernel Density Function :( . Even in stats books (incl. Walpole Mayars) it is not mentioned and on internet just a formula and then references to other software that plot it.

I did't meant to hijack the thread actually!!


I intended to make Violin Plot for the original postie but even after spending hours i was unable to understand the generic mathematics expressions like one mentioned in your post, the Wikipedia link.


The purpose of my last post was just to point out that things could be simpler/easier if he explains how to do the calculation manually or put up an example of the calculation.


Further that if he is interested in replacing the kernel density function (KDF is modified form of histogram, that i understands how works) i would like to make an attempt to making a plot with that.


I hope i have explained myself.

The Violin plot can be made in two parts in Excel and the two parts then overlain


The outside/leafy part is probably best done with a Scatter Chart although an area chart may be able to be used.


The inside looks like a Box Plot which Chandoo recently discussed here: http://chandoo.org/wp/2012/07/31/excel-box-plot-tutorial/

Apologies for misunderstanding your post


The Kernel density function is a method for estimating a parent curve based on a series of smaller distributions and then adding them together to replicate the total function. As an estimation technique, it may not faithfully replicate the actual data which you have in this case and can plot simply using a Scatter Chart.
