Multiple X-Y charts

Hi

I have a set of X-Y co-ordinates representing positions of features from an archaeological dig, and have several features that I want to chart together, to show a plan of the findings.

Feature1, Feature2, Feature3

X1 Y1 X2 Y2 X3 X4

2 0.1 2.3 0.7 3.1 0.8

2.2 0.3 2.4 0.9 3.5 0.9

2.7 0.4 2.5 1.5 3.7 1.1

2.8 0.45 2.6 1.6

2.8 1.9

IE 3, or more pairs of co-ordinates to plot 3 XY points.

When I try to add the second data pair, Excel assumes 2 more plots, not 1.

Many thanks

Does this mean Feature 1 has 5 sets of co-ords, Feature 2 has 4 sets of co-ords etc?

If so have a look at a sample here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/47n2lnc128p9pxj/Archeo.xls

Setup a chart (X-Y Scatter Chart) using the first X-Y pair only

Right click on the Chart, Select data

Add a new series, complete as required for second series

Add a new series, complete as required for third series

Then change axis scales to be the same range and reshape chart to be roughly square

Using this technique you can now plot any number of X-Y related data

Well up to the 255 series per chart limit anyway.

If you have more than 255 series just overlay multiple charts, making sure the axis scales are the same

Hi,

can I take the opportunity of Hui's nice example to ask a further question ?

How would you do it if the result you want is to connect the ith point of feature 1 with the ith point of feature 2 and then the ith point of feature 2 to feature 3 ? i.e. if paired columns where different time points (ti, value(ti)) and the line was the grouping variable ?

I would like to avoid transpositions.

Thanks a lot

Have a look at:

I just added 2 extra series connected to the existing data
