Excel Not Responding

Hello,
Not sure if this is necessarily the right forum for this, but this problem is so consistent, that maybe somone can help. I generally work with large excel files. My excel is constantly going into "not responding mode" for minutes and then finally comes out of it fine. I have done lots online research but have never found a good solution to this. Any suggestions?

thanks

Save file as .xlsb.
Modify calculations lighter.
Is there links?
Get more memory.
Get newer Excel version.
Make a Sample File and Upload it here...

Ok. I just read about the .xlsb. It does seem like a solution. it mentioned the risks and they seem minimal. However, it does mention that is hard to recover informatoin when it does crash. Is that your experience with .xlsb?
** there are no links
** can't really modify the calculations.
** memory is good
** excel version is Office 365, updated

thanks

Crash? Of course You have backups or You'll do many times 'SaveCopyAs'!
Why cannot You modify the calculations?
.xlsb so far quicker, smaller, has worked more stable than .xlsx if huge files.
You 'use' Your file from Your own harddisk!
... and ... do all 'data' have to be in same file?

** Yes, currently I use it from my own harddisk, but will probably move it to Dropbox (but primarly used off same computer).
** As far as calculations are concerned, I'd rather not modify them as they work for what I need.
** Data does not necessarily have to be in same file. I always understood that to be the safest, most reliable way to work. ie, linking to multiple workbooks creates more problems.
** I save as under new versions often as back up

Shortly...
Calculations could 'sometimes' make lighter - of course risks or
even some could make with VBA?
Or set 'manual calculation' then You don't need that feature.
If could share huge file for smaller parts without linking
then You would have few smaller files - sometimes quicker too.

XLSB won't help as that is only how the file is stored
It is still uncompressed when opened

Keep the file stored locally ie: on C:
Use a PC with as Much Memory as you can
Close as many applications as possible especially web browsers as they soak up memory

Next is too restructure the file to eliminate wastefull formulas,
ie: Volatile Formulas and formulas that use whole columns,
as well as formulas that look in external locations for data, Try and keep the data local if possible

Ok..but whenever my Excel goes into (not responding), I do not see it using very much of the CPU.

Also, I just noticed that my Office programs say 32 bit in task mgr. Shouldn't they read 64 bit if my OS is 64 bit?

@harryhaase
As I wrote already in #2 reply:
Save file as .xlsb. didn't help
Modify calculations lighter. try to think again
Is there links? no links
Get more memory. memory is good
Get newer Excel version. Office 365, updated
Make a Sample File and Upload it here... try to think again

and in #4 reply:
You 'use' Your file from Your own harddisk! I use it from my own harddisk
.... anyway do not move to Dropbox!
... and ... do all 'data' have to be in same file? try to think again
>> Of course, You have a lot of free space in Your harddisk.
It will make nasty feeling!
