conditional format of cell based on look up

I would like to format a cell colour based on the value from a combobox.

Imagine a drop-down list with colour codes and cells adapting to your choice of colour.

Is that possible without scripts?

Firstly, Welcome to the Chandoo.org forums


Yes, What you want is possible

Add a Combo box Control from the Developer Tab

Link it to a list of Colors or other words in a range

Link it to an Cell Link cell

Select the cells you want to color

Goto Conditional formatting (CF)

You will need to add a number of entries one for each color

Add a CF based on a formula

=CellLink = Value1

Set Format


Add the last two steps repeatedly for each of your selections in your Combo Box
