Combining scatter charts with quadrants or other charts

Hi Chandoo and everybody:

We all know that scatter charts are excellent to plot X Y data, however in many ocasions you need to show such data on top of a parametrized section, such as a quadrant or a matrix. I wonder if any of you have worked with these type of challenges. I tried to work on a program like this. First a I intented to use X Y error bars to establish a perimeter around certain data, but it was difficult and cumbersome to define and almost impossible to fill the permiter area with color. Finally I ended up "cheating" the system and created two different files and grouped them for this purpose. Please take a look to the adjoining file and let me know a better way to do it.

Regards,

Marcelo

This is a simple chart but a little bit messy to make

Firstly, Make the Background Risk Areas as 3 series of a Stacked Area chart, this will be on the Primary Y axis.

You will need to change your values on the Risk Area sheet accordingly as they are now stacked

Then add a new series for the Scatter Chart

Initially add it as data and just use the Y values for the Scatter Chart

Select the series and Change its Axis to the secondary Y Axis

Change the Chart type to Scatter

Then add the X Axis range

Adjust Axis ranges

Add labels

Format to suit

If that is too complicated I've done it for you here: https://rapidshare.com/files/116107600/Scatter_Risk_Graph_REV3_Hui.xls

Hi Hui:

Thanks for your answer. However I have problems downloading it from Rapidshare. Would you be so kind to send it through a different service provider. Thanks.

Best regards,

Marcelo

The above link works fine (i just tested it)?

I am trying to modify this example to create a scatter with a "box" on the scatter with the exterior points that aren't "square" (203.157, -64.185, 203.097, -64.245). I would like for the this serve as control limits of sorts for some measurement data.

The data I want to place in it looks like this.

203.113 -64.211

203.111 -64.21

203.116 -64.211

203.111 -64.21

203.118 -64.212

203.116 -64.212

203.146 -64.221

203.122 -64.213

203.121 -64.213

203.112 -64.21

203.103 -64.207

203.114 -64.211

203.109 -64.209

203.108 -64.209

203.101 -64.207

203.115 -64.211

203.114 -64.211

203.116 -64.211

203.111 -64.21

203.114 -64.211

203.116 -64.212

203.11 -64.21

203.109 -64.209

203.103 -64.207

203.109 -64.209

203.118 -64.212

203.108 -64.209

any help or links to other posts would be much appreciated.

Sorry the data points for the exterior square are

203.157 -64.185

203.097 -64.245

203.157 -64.245

203.097 -64.185

I just modified this example..... brain does not work hard until I post something and dont want someone to figure it out first.

I just added 4 new series to create the box. Duh!!!

I was going to say just a dd a new series to the chart and setup coordinates as appropriate

Have you solved your problem now?
