Coloring the cells based on a value in another cell in a column

How do I change the color of a cell based on a dynamic value in another cell.

e.g.

Defect ID Status

11 New

12 Assigned


So if the value in Status field is New change the color of 11 to Yelllow and so on....

Have you tried using Conditional Formatting to acheive this.

I tried it, I am not very good in excel....

When I tried conditional formatting it only allows 3 conditions to be added whilst I need nearly 7 and I use excel 2003. Also, I am not sure if I am doing it right as it colors the field status instead of defect ID.

What I am loking for is that it looks into the field' Status' and depending on the value in that field change the background color for the cell containing the 'defect ID'.

Please define the color codes to be used against the values and maybe we will be able to help you out.


Color Code ------- Status Name

Red ------- Long Pending


etc..

Chandoo's and the other posts here won't solve your problem for you, but they will teach you the techniques you can use and then modify to suit your own purposes


In your case


Lets assume that the 11 is in cell A2

Select A2:Ax

Conditional Format

Apply using a Formula

=$B2="New"

Select a Format

Apply.
