Hi,

For those who are familiar with Edward Tufte book, he talked about this interesting visualization example of a Paris Train Schedule by E.J. Marey.

Wonder if we can re-create this in Excel ?

Hi, pacochin!

I immediately loved this chart. I'm gonna give it a try as an exercise this week.

Still interested on it?

Regards.

Pacochin

It can be done as an Excel Scatter Chart

do you have a set of data which is applicable ?

Hi, pacochin!

Bet you wanna take a look at this:

http://www.2shared.com/file/SGRD32VT/Railroad_chart_from_Edward_Tuf.html

As you posted, I don't know if anyone had attempted to do this in Excel... but I tried.

Just as an exercise, it was funny, specially Excel metrics where I had to make a couple of tricky things (that origined a new topic as well). Check out the VBA code.

Hope you enjoy it.

Regards!

Hi!

New download link since 2shared became erratically available:

Hi everyone. I'm the author of that blog post mentioned above (thanks for visiting) and I'm looking for the Excel file created by SirJB7. I'm interested in seeing what's possible when trying to create train schedules like this in Excel. Does anyone have the file?

Hi Nick

Firstly, Welcome to the Chandoo.org forums.

I don't believe anybody ever tackled it as no data was ever posted

Hi Nick ,

With apologies to the author ( Pablo , aka SirJB7 ) , download it from here :

Hi, rougeux!

I edited my previous comment with a new working and permanent link to the related file.

Within the workbook you'll find a sample schedule file from a local railway branch that passes near my home. The data source is originally a PDF file which has been copied and pasted. If you have another input source or design just get back to me and we'll see.

Please just advise if any issue.

Regards!

@NARAYANK991

Hi, Narayan!

Thanks for helping people find my old uploaded files, yesterday I had many issues like that with 2shared and 4shared. I'm moving them to DropBox as they're required.

Regards!

Thanks both of you, Narayan and SirJB7. I appreciate you making the file available. I was able to download it just fine. It looks to be a lot more complicated than I expected!

Hi, rougeux!

Yes, it's been a nice and interesting exercise. Nice and interesting implies hard as the hell sine qua non. But you yet know, just advise if any issue.

Regards!

Hi, delvillardennis!

Thank you for your kind words and glad to hear you liked it, ask me if you got stuck with something.

But there's no need to dig up so deep your Spanish dictionary as:

a) worksheet "Instrucciones" (Instructions) is both in Spanish and English

b) worksheet "Estaciones" (Stations), just 10 column headers (2 groups of 2 by 2 options + 2)

c) worksheet "Horarios" (Schedule), just 5 column headers, all the rest are station names

d) worksheet "Parametros" (Parameters), 4 column headers, 8 values and 8 descriptions

e) worksheet "Diagrama" (Diagram), nothing at all :)

f) VBA project uses English, ok, the names, not any problem if done all previous
