A new forum....?

I think you are taking some very positive steps towards bringing this forum along with new technology. It will be an improved experience for all once complete.


I think the testing environment is a must. I am sure you will outline what you want to achieve and make improvements as you go. Have a look at the Ozgrid forum for a steer on how to do VB Code on a forum well. It seems to be one of the only forums which has nailed the colour coding for VB. I like that what you see in VB you see on the forum. This is much easier to follow and will be an improvement on your site over other sites.


There will probably be a few teething problems early but these will pass.


There have been some good points – the notification email for posts you participate in. Additionally Ozgid has a nice feature where after you log in there is a green tick mark against all your subscribed threads. This lets you easily follow the progression of the thread.


I just had a look at the xenforo website. It looks like a solid platform. There is a lot of questions in the forum. Here is an example page for those interested.

I have been using the new Forum this morning and want to report that it looks very good.

It allows full HTML tags in the posts so that color, font, size etc can be changed

It allows inclusion of Pics and Videos in a post

It has predefined formatting for VB Code, not that I could work out how to apply it

It has individual messaging to other users.

It has inbuilt polling facility

Facebook & Tweet posts

Easy to use


So far so good


As long as it stops Spam I think it will be a great improvement for the forums

Would it be too much to ask you to post a screen shot of the look and feel of the front end to calm some of the concerns of the long term members?


Does the HTML tags change the colours automatically or do you have to program in the colours in the same way that you currently do? Basically applying a bit of amateur coding to the back end to get a result on the forum front end. It would be a luxury to have the program apply the colour to VB rather than to have to program it in manually.


I assume XL files can be loaded along with pictures and videos? FB and Twitter was not something I have seen so that will be interesting in a good way.


Sounds like things are going well and moving along at a rate of knots!!!

ps. I got some emails from Narayan late last night with a picture of the keyboard. I was using the key two to the right of the L when I should have been using the one under the ESC button. I pity the fool that I am. Thanks so much for your help though.

Not sure about posting pictures here (unlike new forum, that is harder to do here), but I would agree with Hui and others that the new XF forum looks promising.

The VB coloring is done automatically. You just need to tag it as correct code, like:

So, fairly simply...there's also buttons to add the coding marks for you. And, for people who like the old school way, you can use a BB editor instead of Rich text.

A scoring/trophy system - bit unsure about that?

New forum board is a great improvement, clean and clear, a lot more functions, one that will go down well is the ability to upload files without using third party's.


I think there should be tags but restricted to the Ninjas to stop tag spam, tags will help searching.

Hi!

Reading all previous questions, suggestions, wishes, approvals, ideas & comments, I think that if not all then a great part are yet satisfied with the default features at the test forum.

My humble advice? Why not migrating yesterday? I'd settle down for this even before having tested others, of course regarding all the bunch of Excel & Programming sites that I visited.

PS: Now reading again all previous posts, have I misunderstood or all actual accounts/nicks are going to be migrated and receive a new password by email? If so, a lot of spam accounts will be automatically disabled as they won't be receiving the mail because of their fake addresses, but last spammers of a given email address would receive their passport too. Why not shooting them first too and get rid of them before moving to the new house?

Also, just my 2 cents - I don't have a dog in this fight: don't discount phpbb. I think vbulletin costs about 400 bucks usd. phpbb is FOSS and, at least from a user perspective, as feature rich.

Sorry for going offline. I had to return from USA to India suddenly. This kept me away from site related tasks for a few days. Now that I am in India, I will be submitting a request for forum transfer this week. Once the transfer is over, we will push this forum active and old one in to archives mode.

Hi All,

I was searching for How to mark a thread as solved as one of the member asked me and land up in this thread. Quite a intresting thread, specially when it comes to an enterprenuer asking the members who are not directly or indirectly reporting to him (;) that how should we design something which benefits the maximum(I have seen very rare people doing that). And I can see alot of beautiful and excellent suggestions made by you all. To mention, one of them was to not go any question unanswered, and that what happens here. No question in my last 4 month of histroy , after I Joined, I had seen unanswered. Totally Awesome. Thats make this site dependable. I often suggest this site to many of my collueges to visit.

Saying that, I would like to make a suggestion, since few of them come with a query back to me, saying that the search feature like google throws thousands of results sometimes and than again it becomes difficult to peep into each one of them and find the relevant information. If there is a quick method to do that than please share as a general discussion as New to forum user thread with the technique.

If not than if possible user can categorise the problem while posting a new thread as formula, conditional formatting, VBA, array formula and other areas ( which cab be modified to actual category by administrator).

Right now you have forums, topic wise and even you can search different forum also. But ASK an EXCEL question is a sort of very general forum. In Search if these categories are available than I think it will be a bit faster.

Secondly, We receive notification for the watched threads in our mailbox, can we have an option to reply to thread directly from any mail server as "Reply to Thred",which will become the answer of thread without actually logging into forum. As many server dont allow to loggin in other outside.

Correct me if Something is there on above two points and I am unaware of that.
