I think you are taking some very positive steps towards bringing this forum along with new technology. It will be an improved experience for all once complete.
I think the testing environment is a must. I am sure you will outline what you want to achieve and make improvements as you go. Have a look at the Ozgrid forum for a steer on how to do VB Code on a forum well. It seems to be one of the only forums which has nailed the colour coding for VB. I like that what you see in VB you see on the forum. This is much easier to follow and will be an improvement on your site over other sites.
There will probably be a few teething problems early but these will pass.
There have been some good points – the notification email for posts you participate in. Additionally Ozgid has a nice feature where after you log in there is a green tick mark against all your subscribed threads. This lets you easily follow the progression of the thread.
I just had a look at the xenforo website. It looks like a solid platform. There is a lot of questions in the forum. Here is an example page for those interested.
