Why different value is shown in excel cell formula bar?

On the cell, I see value 0 00:07:40.

When I click the same cell, I see value 1/0/1900 12:07:40 AM in the formula bar.

I want to see same cell value appearing on the formula bar.

Kindly assist.

Firstly, Welcome to the Chandoo.org forums.


What you see in the Formula Bar is what the cell contains

What you see in the cell is influenced by the application of Custom Number Formats and Conditional Formatting


dates are stored as whole numbers with day 0 being 1 Jan 1900 day 1 is 2 Jan 1900 etc

Times are stored as numbers between 0 (midnight) and 1 Midnight the next night, so 0.5 is Noon 0.25 is 6am etc


Dates and Times can therefore be stored together


So the cell contains day 0 and the time as 12:07:04 am

where as the cell is using a Custom Number Format of d hh:mm:ss

You can check that by selecting the cell

Ctrl+1

Select Custom
