VLookup Question

GENESIS

New Member
Hi All,
I just have a question about Vlookups..

I have used it many times and it helps me a lot but I am wondering if there is a way to search data in different spreadsheets when the data in the table range in not on the first column.
It always work when the data is on column A, but never in other columns and sometimes I am not able to move columns in a spreadsheet for work reasons.

Thanks
Genesi

Hi Genesi ,

The VLOOKUP function is not dependent on the lookup value being present in column A ; the requirement is that the lookup value will be sought in the first column of the lookup range ; thus if your lookup range is J7 : AB37 , the lookup value will be searched for in column J. If you now change the lookup range to AB7 : CD37 , the lookup value will be searched for in column AB.

If you can upload a sample workbook , a more appropriate answer can be given.

Hi Narayan,
Thank you for the explanation. So what I have to do is always make sure that the lookup range has the value I am looking for as the "first" column.
Great.
