Vlookup and sum multiple values in the same column

RadMan

New Member
Hello,

I've been searching multiple sites for a solution to this problem.

I'm trying to lookup similar Text in column A and return the sum of all corresponding values in column J. I find vlookup is good for finding a particular value when the text is only found once in a column, but i'm trying to add all of the similar values together. Is vlookup the right thing to use?

Thanks

Hi, RadMan!

Give a look at this file:

Check the yellow shaded cells for values and formulas.

Just advise if any issue.

Regards!

Wow, completely over my head. But it seems like it will work. I'll have to study it for a while. Thanks

Hi, RadMan!

Glad you solved it. Thanks for your feedback and for your kind words too. And welcome back whenever needed or wanted.

Regards!

PS: just advise if any issue or don't understand something.

PS2: BTW, your avatar looks a hell of a lot like mine... :)

JB,

This also was what I was looking for and answered my question. However, I am having difficulty getting it to work on my spreadsheet. It works well in the spreadsheet you provided, but when I apply it to mine; No good. I did notice when I adjust the IFERROR formula to get the reference to my cells, the outer brackets ,{}, disappear and I just end up with a blank cell. This also happens in yours as well and I have tried to put them back in manually, but to no avail; it just puts the formula as text in the cell.

I know I am missing something or else I would not be inquiring further.

PS: I know basics so please use un-geek lingo (jk) :D

Hi, MavMarsh!

First of all welcome to Chandoo's website Excel forums. Thank you for your joining us and glad to have you here.

As a starting point I'd recommend you to read the three first green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, you'll always be welcome back here. Tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

And about your question...

If the problem is only that the brackets in the formula disappeared, just edit the formula with F2 and remember that array formulas should be entered with Ctrl-Shift-Enter instead of just Enter (array formulas are those which are embedded within brackets... well, in fact this isn't the definition of array formulas but a simple way to identify them at a glance).

If still couldn't get if working, consider uploading a sample file (including manual examples of desired output), it'd be very useful for those who read this and might be able to help you. Thank you. Give a look at the second green sticky post at this forums main page for uploading guidelines.

Regards!

JB,

Ctrl-Shift-Enter : I did not know this. Learned something knew, which is why I am here.

The formula is now working properly.

Thanks for the insight.
