Validation and Lookup

Chandoo, this is the first post that I am making on your amazing site. I have a spreadsheet with 4 columns. Column 1 is a subject column. Column 2 lists a question, to which there are 4 possible responses which are located in Column 3. Column 3 has a Validation List for one of the 4 possible responses. Each response in Column 3 corresponds to a particular symbol A,B,C or D in sequential order in the Validation List which I want to populate into Column 4 with a number value corresponding to the symbol. I have , however, not linked the values to the responses. A= 0 points, B = 3 points, C= 6 points, D=10 points. How do I go about defining the lookup formula? I am using Windows 7. Thank you very kindly, Abdool

Welcome to the forum akmk!

In attached, you'll see an array formula I wrote. Array formulas are confirmed using Ctrl+Shift+Enter, not just Enter. You can tell it's an array due to curly brackets around formula.

Luke, thank you for the solution. I am overwhelmed as the formula is way over my simple brain! But it works beautifully. I don't think I presented my problem in a very clear way in the spreadsheet. The Validation List could have been set out in rows rather than across columns. I will play around and see if I can streamline it so that the solution is easier for me. You are an Excel Ninja! Thanks, once again. I will see if there are any suggestions from Members in improving the format of my worksheet to make it simpler.
