Unselecting a cell erroneously selected using mouse + ctrl key

suki

New Member
Hi all,

When selecting a discontinuous range of cells using the mouse and ctrl key, it can happen that after selecting a few required cells, the mouse is then clicked on a cell which is not required. Is there a way of deselecting this erroneous cell selection whilst retaining the previously selected cells?

Thanks

Anyone have an answer? I ran into this recently when recording a macro that removed empty rows from a downloaded query list in a maintenance mgmt system. Not the biggest issue on Chandoo.org but...

If your recording a macro and make a mistake, Finish the macro, go into the code and delete the relevent cell references

Hi!

As Jason Statham in Transporter 3 I'm gonna break one of the rules I said there weren't to be broken, so I'm gonna answer here:

a) Next time would you please start a new topic instead of writing on another user's one? Even if in this case it's directly related to the original topic and it wouldn't be seen at all as hijacking, this is a very old topic so the OP surely won't come back to read the updates. If needed you could add a reference in your new one.

b) It's hardly frequent that someone who's recording a macro run another macro so as to correct any mistake in the started process, in fact I don't remember having done such a thing but always proceeded as described by Hui.

c) Despite of this I tried to test the method described and it works fine. But just for 1 or 2 selected areas. For more selected areas it doesn't work as expected which it is (or IMHO it should be) deselecting the selected areas one by one in reverse order as they were selected: it fails as it deselects the last selected area, and then goes on deselecting all the previously selected areas but from the first one to the penultimate one. So welcome to the method, but not fully usable.

Regards!

Hi Sir JB7

a) I didn't so much mention this link for the sake of the op but more for the sake of the Ninjas who answered originally. I thought it might be interesting for them, but then again perhaps not. One of the things I personally enjoy from forums is finding out stuff like this.

b) The original OP wasn't recording a macro, so would have worked well for her

c) Yep, it only is good for removing the current activecell. To do otherwise it would need to track cell selections, which is a whole another ball game. But it's certainly handy in the case that you're in the middle of selecting some vast non-contiguous range, and have just made an error. If I had a dollar for every time I'd done that...

But your point taken. The problem is I keep forgetting that unlike say the MREXCEL or EXCELGURU forums, this one doesn't notify users by email, so it's a lot more time-sensitive (or even 'front-of-mind') than other forums I've posted on in the past.

I'll bear that in mind.

Cheers

Hi!

Ooops... you're right, it wasn't suki (OP) but bfraser (3rd poster) who was recording a macro. Maybe it's time to go for a Carlsberg. Or 2. Lastly odd numbers don't go by hand with it.

Regards!

PS: Yes, I know that the lack of user notification is something that's missed. Welcome to the club again, and get ready for pushing your golf cart, automatic ones and caddies not available.

Hi!

I read somewhere I don't remember something like "...About the Author... is a Business Analyst... swears by Edward Tufte and Stephen Few as much as he swears at Excel 2007...". I neither remember anything about dollars and signs.

But regarding Tufte one of my first approaches to Chandoo's website was Tufte related. Give a look at his topic:

@SirJB7

Hi, myself!

So long...

Why don't you stop hijacking other user posts and do right things instead of doing things right? (quoting Peter, yes, Drucker,... it's not mine)

Regards!
