Unexpected results for Interactive Chart

Hello,

I have followed the instructions in the following tutorial: http://chandoo.org/wp/2013/04/23/interactive-chart-in-excel-tutorial/

I keep losing charts when I close the Excel file and it seems like the only way to get them back is to hard code a new number in the cell link (cells D2, D11, D27 and D43 on the Controls worksheet).

I can have all 4 charts up and working perfectly - cycling through the drop down selections etc. behaving exactly as I would expect and want them to do. Then I close the file and maybe 1 of the 4 will be visible when I next open the file.

If I enter a number in the cell link the chart will reappear on the Dashboard sheet but on occasion individual charts will not appear. I have tried deleting controls, named ranges, linked pictures and re-creating several times.

However, there is no consistent behavior that I can determine. For example, sometimes chart 1 and 2 will be present upon re-opening and then the next time it will only be chart 3 that is visible.

Additionally, on occasion it will drop reference to a given chart - I select for example Manufacturing and Energy Division form the first list box control - and the chart although on the Controls worksheet is present and has not been altered it will not display. Dropped charts also appear to be random as they are not consistent each time I close or re-open the file. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it as I am unable to determine what is causing these irregularities. Please help if you can.

Great appreciation,
Jen

Hello,

I have since downloaded the Interactive Chart in Excel file from this site. I made no changes to the data, named ranges, or charts. I just saved it out after making a few different chart selections from the drop down box. I wanted to see if I could save, re-open and get different results than what I had experienced with my own efforts.

However, now the 3rd and 4th charts from the tutorial file are not appearing. So essentially what I experienced is now re-occurring with the tutorial file. I am completely flummoxed, I have no idea why this is occurring or how to correct it. If anyone can offer some insight as to how to correct this issue I would greatly appreciate a response.

Many thanks,
Jen

I can't repeat your experience and so I suspect it is an issue at your end

What version of Excel are you using?

Are the files saved in a Trusted Location?

Is Excel updated to the latest version with all updates installed?

Did you enable Macro's and All other warnings when you opened the file?

Have you tried downloading again to a new, trusted, location and see if it behaves the same

Please report back on each question above

Hi ,

I tried out your file in Excel 2007 and Excel 2010 ; in the 2007 version I experience the problem ; so far in Excel 2010 I have not.

Test with the attached file.

I tried out your file in Excel 2010 and Excel 2013 ;
I don't experience the problem in either version

Excel 2007 also had an issue with Charts based on Named Formula containing the text "Chart"

It may be worth a try renaming all your Named Formula "Cht" instead of "Chart" if your using 2007.

Hello Narayan,

Thank you for trying to be of assistance. I am happy to hear that it works in 2010. Regretfully, though at work and at home I have the 2007 edition. Is there a known work around for this issue. Or can anyone suggest another method of getting the same effect "Interactive Chart" that works for 2007?

Hello Hui,
Thank you kindly for your response. You state that you can't repeat the experience, can I assume you are using Excel 2010 or higher? As Narayan was able to replicate the issue with 2007 but apparently modifications made to the program in 2010 have rectified the issue.

As for your questions regretfully the file is to be used at work in a shared folder environment. Therefore, I will have no control over the settings you mentioned for the multiple users that will encounter the file. Therefore, I would require another solution.

Hello again Hui,

Many thanks for the suggestion. However, my charts are named after Divisions e.g. AGRI, CCJS, ISD, IOFD, ICSD etc. so the word Chart is not the issue.
