Unable to link data from another file

Greetings!!


There are two excel files. When I try to link data into 1st excel file from 2nd excel file, following message pops up

“Invalid reference. This file version cannot contain formulas that reference cells beyond a worksheet size of 256 columns (column IW or higher) or 65536 rows”

a) Why aforementioned message pops up

b) What is the solution

The 256 Column limit is a hangover from pre-2007 Excel versions

Open the file
Then Save the file as an Excel *.xlsx or *.xlsb file type
Then Close and re-open the new file and try again
