Title in the cell before a drop down list is chosen

Hello,

I'm finding it hard to get the right words to ask the question, let alone search for it, so I hope you can help.....

1. What I am trying to do is to have a cell in Excel display default text, until a drop down list is slected. So the default test is replaced as soon as one of the data entry lists is chosen, is this possible?

2. Also ideally I'd like to be able to choose from a short list of words, but instead of entering the chosen word, for a different word to be entered. So for instance I can select "Site Tour" from a drop down list, but the text entered in the box is "ST", is this possible?

Thanks to all...

Hi evansgo,

Welcome to the forum! You can add 'Title, Input message and Error Alert' through Data Validation Option. In order to do this. go to Data Tab, Select Data Validation:

- Select Input Message Tab and write Title and Input Message

- Select Error Alert Tab and write Title and Input Message.

About your second question I am not sure is it possible or not.

Thanks, but that's not quite what I wanted. Doing what you suggest will put a pop up box somewhere on the workbook only when that cell is selected, what I am looking for is text within the cell before anything is selected or chosen from the list, and then is replaced by whatever text is chosen from the drop down list. I can kind of do what I want with comment boxes, but it'd be neater if it was always there.

In Data Validation, Go to the Error Tab, and remove the Check mark from "Show Alert when Invalid Data Is Entered".

Select all you cells where you want the default text to be displayed.... enter the default text.

Now enable the Drop Down as well...

What you will see is the default text, which would change when the user selects other options from the drop down.

For Point 2.

Is it always going to be the First Character of the text or there can be some other list as well?

Thanks, that still doesn't do what I need as its a once only function. What I need is to somehow check to see if the cell is blank and then to enter a title text. The sheet will be regulaly used so needs to "reset" itself if the data drop down box is used and then deleted. It seems so simple, but I still cannot see how to do it...

Hi ,

Can you be a little more specific with cell addresses and so on ; where do you want the default text to appear ? Where is the drop-down list ?

Is it possible for you to upload a sample worksheet ?

Hi, evansgo!

Give a look at this file:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60558749/Title%20in%20the%20cell%20before%20a%20drop%20down%20list%20is%20chosen%20%28for%20evansgo%20at%20chandoo.org%29.xlsm

Column A is the list with the selection options, named range SelectList.

Column B is the list with the default option, named range DefaultList.

Cell D1 is the dropdown box.

When blanked, displays first element of DefaultList (unique).

When dropped down, always has the list of SelectList.

It was what you wanted, wasn't it? For first point of course. For second point it's too late today.

Regards!
