Tip 6 in 95ExcelTipsv5.pdf document

I'm working through the 95ExcelTipsv5.pdf document which I got from this site. My question concerns the 6th item on the list.

When I use the shortcut alt +, instead of auto summing the selected cells and putting value in cell beneath as indicated in the tips, the content of the first selected cell is replaced with a not equal to sign. See attachment.

I am mac user. Can you kindly take a look and let me know where I may be going wrong?
