Sparklines are not sparking

bobhc

Excel Ninja
I have tried putting Sparkline’s in to a column next to a table, I ctr/clicked to pick the cells with the insulin readings in for the Sparkline data but received the following error message……”The reference for the data location or data range is not valid”……I assumed this was because Sparkline’s would not work with a data choice that was not in continuous cells!! So I selected the measurement cells and made a ‘helper’ chart, this seemed to solve the problem and when I entered the measurement in to the ‘helper’ cells the Sparkline’s are update. I then linked the cells in the main table to the ‘helper’ table so that data only had to be entered once, Enter data in the main table, this updated the ‘helper’ table and this updates the Sparkline’s, perfect……but I am convinced I am doing this all wrong and would appreciated a kick in the right direction.

When picking the data cells for the Sparkline’s am I doing it right? Why am I getting the error message?

If Sparkline’s will not work with data that is not continuous and I have to have a ‘helper’ what am I doing wrong when I try and link the main table cells to the ‘helper table cells, the linking cannot be right as that brings up the results that I have highlighted in the ‘helper’? The data is either wrong or placed in the wrong cell.

It seems as though the ‘helper cells are ignoring the layout and ‘think’ that the unselected cells from the main table are there!!

When I get this sorted and I have to have ‘helper’ tables I would like to move these to another sheet and then hide this so that only the main table and Sparkline’s are visible, in the same way as data validation drop down tables are hidden, can I do this.

I don't select the data first, just select the cell where you want the sparkline

then click the appropriate Sparkline menu icon from the Insert, Sparklines Tab

I would save the file as an Excel *.xlsx file instead of an *.xls file, this maybe a Google translation issue

also remember

Times are stored as Numbers between 0 (Midnight) and 1 (the next midnight)

Hence the 2 Columns R & U will always be between 0 and 1

I am assuming you are using the Sparklines built into Excel 2010 and not another addin?

You can also use Sparklines on non-continuous ranges by using Named Formula

Hui, many thanks for your time

Did as you suggested and followed the link, another much needed learning lesson, I made named rages for each day with the selected cells and it works like a dream....I knew I was going about it in the wrong manner,I am saving as .xlsx so it must be a Google(masters of the known world)thing and yes I am using excel 2010 Sparklines.
