Sorting Col w/ date and alpha char's

I have a col that I want to sort. The fomat of the col is: mm/dd/yy-xx where, mm/dd/yy is the date, then the hyphen and finally the xx are 2 alpha chars.

How can I sort so that the date is in ascending order? The -xx is not important.

Some entries are:
10/22/13-AE
12/13/11-CP
12/18/11-CP
10/30/13-AE
11/06/13-AE
8/01/11-CP
2/26/11-CP
3/15/11-CP
8/08/11-CP
8/16/11-CP

One way is to use a helper column to isolate the date portion , and sort on that column.

I never thought. I googled excel split col and found what I needed.
