Slicer/Excel 2010: How to remove duplicates from a slicer

I have a duplicate "January 2012" on a slicer. When I tried to delete the duplicate, I deleted the entire slicer. Is there a way to remove the duplicate?

Good day Parien

You say you have deleted the slicer so just make a new one and watch what you but in to it.If it auto populating then check your input data for duplicates

is the duplicate slightly shaded/greyed out?

ive seen this on mine before... and i've noticed they come and go while i'm workong in the pivottable.... i noticed that sometimes after saving and closing that not the same duplicates would show in the slicer. now, i dont think they show up at all.... lol

Thank you for the feedback. After I deleted the entire slicer, I hit UNDO and got the slicer back again. BOBHC suggested that I check the input data for duplicates. I tried this and I cannot find any duplicates. The data source is a table. The table has only one "Jan '12" so I cannot figure out where the duplicate "Jan 12" is coming from. JASON asked if the duplicate is slightly shaded/greyed out? No, the duplicate looks like the others on the list in the slicer. JASON also suggested saving and closing. I did that, but the duplicate keeps coming back. This is a tad frustrating. Q: Would anyone be willing to look at some screen shots of this duplicate issue? Thank you so much for your consideration.

Thank you for your interest and consideration. At this point, I think that the problem was coming from an error regarding the Data Source File. I could "Refresh" the PivotTable with no problem - everything updated. But when I tried "Refresh All," I got a message telling me that Excel could not open the Data Source File: The file path was for a file that does not exist. (It is possible that the file was an old draft that was deleted last year.) In theory, I should have been able to "Change Data Source." But whenever I tried that, Excel would not accept the change. Finally, I got to the point where I was just wasting time - chasing my tail over this. So I decided to do it over. So what I did was this: I converted the Data Source (a table) back to a normal range. Then I copied the Data Source and pasted it in a new workbook, and then I created a new PivotTable. It was time consuming because I had to do the macros again (for the Data Source) and do the formatting again (for the PivotTable). However, I can now "Refresh All." In addition, I have no duplicates. RELIEF! At this point, I am getting close to the need to transition over to Excel 2013. So I am hoping that 2013 might be easier? Let us pray. Meanwhile, thank you for your interest. It is a fine thing to have a place where I can chat about this stuff :)

Good day Parien

As you have cleaned up the data and made a fresh pivot table and now have no more duplicates there must have been a problem with double entry in the original data.

It sounds as though you where working with old data some of which had been deleted,

a sure fire way of getting Excel in to a fix, you can never be quite sure what was entered by others or how the workbook was constructed.

Pleased you have sorted it out :)

I am using 2013 and there are quite a few improvements which take a little time to

understand but it is a better version (just my humble opinion).

Hello bobhc:

I constructed the original workbook, which is why I assumed that the file path (which does not exist) may have been a draft that I created last year. Fortunately, I did not have to clean up the data source. The data source was fine - the only place where I had duplicates was in the drop down lists for the PivotTable and the Slicer (Two for January 2012 when there should have been only One for January 2012). To make sure that there were no hidden duplicates in the Data Source, I deleted all of January 2012 but the duplicate January 2012 stayed in the PivotTable and Slicer drop down lists: That is what was so frustrating about this. I could not get rid of that duplicate. So I decided to make a new PivotTable, which was a pain, but now it is working fine. It seemed odd to me that I could "Refresh" but when I tried to "Refresh All" I got a message telling me that Excel could not open the data source file. Question: If Excel could not open the data source file, why was Excel "Refreshing" when I added data to my table? I sure hope that I will feel the same as you do about 2013. I am looking forward to it. Thank you for your consideration and support.
