shading chart to show returns above or below average

Hello - hoping someone can help me recreate a chart like in this link: http://postimage.org/image/rtvd3s1jz/

Basically, over a set of dates i have: a series of #s showing what % of a brands volume was on discount, and a series of #s showing % of total store items on discount. i want the area above the line to be green if the brand had a higher % than the total store, and the area below the line to be red if the brand is advertising less than the rest of the store.

the chart in the link is showing stock portfolio returns vs. total stock returns, but the chart i have in mind would look similar.

been trying area charts and error bars, but no luck. thanks!

Firstly, Welcome to the Chandoo.org forums

This is a Stacked Area chart that has a 4ths Series highlighted as the Line

You can see a sample here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1g6sblae2og9e6a/Stacked%20Area%20Chart.xlsx

The chart consists of the date and data

Then you have series to calculate the Minimum, Distance between Minimum and Data, Distance between Maximum and Data

Then Setup a Stacked Area chart

The minimum has no color

The Distance between Minimum and Data is colored Red and

The Distance between Data and Maximum is colored Green

Then add a series to the chart for the data and change its Chart type to a Scatter Chart

Color it black

Very interesting solution Hui. Thanks for posting. I made a tutorial on this today - http://chandoo.org/wp/2013/02/13/shaded-line-charts-excel/

Beautiful! After 2 hours of trying last night I gave up, but this is precisely what I was looking for. Thank you (both) so much - the Chandoo website is 1/1 in solving my excel problems.

Thanks! :)

Hi,

Regarding the shading chart showing returns above/below average, the data I need to show is fraud losses in comparison to industry average. So I need to show the above and below in reverse. Below industry average needs to display as good (green and needs to show the difference underneath the "productivity line") and above industry average needs to display as red and above the "productivity line). How do I reverse the formulas and/or graph to show the data this way??

Thank you so much for your help,

Good day greykitten

Even though your post is very similar to the OP's , by burying your post in someone else's , the question may not attract the forum members as they will assume they have already given their all.

A good clear title to attract members and a question with the level of information to allow members to answer is always the best way to go.....New question New post.

Why not just select the series and Change the series colors to suit your needs?

Right click on the series and Select Format Series
