Question About Budget v Actual

Hello,

I am a new Excel user and have been asked by my superiors to chart several actual versus budget revenue figures (i.e. several revenue streams/products on a month by month basis). I have seen the visual challenge that was posted on this site last year (http://chandoo.org/wp/2009/04/05/budget-vs-actual-charts/) and very much like the first chart suggestion (1.3) as it shows variances – this is particularly helpful to me as my actual revenue sometimes overachieves budget, sometimes underachieves budget and I’d like to show the percentage shortfall/excess.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This looks like a clustered Stacked Column Chart, which is not a native chart type to excel, but can be made with a little bit of work.

The Column below the %Variance Column is colored the same as the Budget Column

You can make them by following the instructions here

Hello,

I need some help with another chart that I am doing which displays actual vs. budget data. It’s a combination column/line chart. I currently have four data series’ (two columns and two lines) for four variables which are on the X axis – the columns represent actual data, and the lines represent budget data.

My issue is with the location of the line series’. Currently, the line points sit directly on the top right hand edge of the corresponding column, whereas I would like to position it in the middle. I can do this in charts where there is only one column and one line for each variable; but cannot figure out how to do it when I have two columns and two lines.

I’d appreciate any help I can get – and I hope the above description makes sense!

Thanks

Shirin

I Don't think you can

In excel 2007, I made a chart with 4 series as Columns and changed 2 series to Lines

The Lines points are positioned equally between both Columns and one Line isn't particularly associated with one Column.

This is probably because the 4 sets of data (2 lines and 2 Columns) are all representing that particular month or other date period.

The Columns have to be offset to be visible and hence appear off the date slightly, but the lines points don't and sit on the date exactly.

Now that I've said I don't think you can, I'm sure somebody will. Lets Hope.

ps: Please start new Posts for seperate problems, It makes searching for them later a lot easier.

Thanks, I will ask new questions in a new post in future.

Also – I have found tutorial that resolves this issue:
