I am looking for a formula that would sum duplicate items (A1,A5=xxxx1) linked to the drop down month box on cell C, the result would be 15, if the month is the drop down box "D", the result would be 5.

A B C D

1 xxxx1 1 1

2 xxxx1 2 1

3 xxxx1 3 1

4 xxxx1 4 1

5 xxxx1 5 1

6 xxxx2 6 6

7 xxxx2 1 2

8 xxxx3 2 3

9 xxxx4 4 3

Hi, Val!

First of all welcome to Chandoo's website Excel forums. Thank you for your joining us and glad to have you here.

As a starting point I'd recommend you to read the green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, you'll always be welcome back here. Tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

And about your question...

A few doubts: what are the meanings of columns A:D, assuming the first column is row number?. should it sum A1:A5 and A&:A7 too?, which is the column to be summed, C or D?

Regards!

Val

Try:

=SUMIF(A1:A9,"xxxx1",B1:B9)

or

=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A9="xxxx1")*B1:B9)
