I was trying to make an Excel file smaller and found online the download WINZIP, I put my file into WINZIP and then moved it back into the original folder but half way through doing this I realised WINZIP hadnt actually made it any smaller therefore I just cancelled the save into the original folder as its huge and I didnt want to wait an eternity for it to save, anyway, now I cant find it anywhere!

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Excel files already contain a level of compression internally when you save them

Try saving the file as an. Excel Binary *.xlsb file type

You could also try WinRar which can compress much better than win zip

Some data in spreadsheets like pictures also don't compress very well

My file was already a xlsb, there are no formulas or pictures or graphs in there, I've deleted all unused lines and columns I dont know what else I can do, it's 20,474KB which I thought was massive until I started researching and came across most people have MB which is bigger? It just takes so long to open and ends up crashing, maybe I'll try WinRar then, I also tried copy and pasting values into a new workbook but still got the same size

Note that compressing will only shrink the file size while it's being stored. Opening the file will still take the same amount of time.

I'd check for long formulas, formula referencing entire columns/rows rather than relevant data, etc. A quick google search for "optimize excel" will also lead you to several other ideas to help speed up your workbook.

As I say, absolutely no formulas or cell referrencing is in here, just a lot of data, 7 tabs with roughly 35000 lines of text/numbers in each tab.

Thanks anyway

Hi, tarymahon!

Consider uploading a sample file (including manual examples of desired output), it'd be very useful for those who read this and might be able to help you. Thank you.

Give a look at the second green sticky post at this forums main page for uploading guidelines.

Regards!

Firstly, my post said that my file had dissapeared so I do not have a sample file, Secondly, my question is very generic eg. how do you make a xlsb file that has no formulas or formatting of any kind in it smaller in size,

and third, I am restricted by my company like many people that post on here and am unable to access file sharing sites, therefore couldnt upload even if I wanted to.

Hi, tarymahon!

I apologize, I focused on sizes and compressing and didn't fully read your explanation.

I assumed that you checked in temp folders, but if you didn't give it a try, it might be the only place from which to retrieve your file. Sorry.

Regards!
