Multi-group time period visualization

EERS

New Member
Any ideas on how to visualize a various time periods and multiple groups as below?

Time periods in each group are specified as start and end dates... for example
Organization Org1 15 Jan 1998 22 Dec 2008
Role Role2 12 June 2003 15 Dec 2005

Formatting is optional and all the periods can be in one line (say all Roles). Better this way, when the time period labels are long and this will reduce the clutter and overlap of labels.

Thank you.

@vletm Thanks for your response.

Any specific suggestion? I have been doing quite some charts but this one I couldn't figure out

You should upload a sample Excel-file which has data You have used with Your snapshot.
Without data ... You can wait
or
Of course, You could search from Chandoo.org same kind of threads
... as You have done after You've read Forum Rules

@vletm Here you go with the sample file and the desired chart representation. Each group can be in one bar or 2 bars (as presented; to reduce the label clutter).

Please advise.

Because Your data has overlapping (marked with box) ==> sample plan-B.
Need to know
- what really needs ... eg those colors?
- is Your data always in that position?
- is Your 'output' always in that position?

@vletm Thanks for your response. The graph is a typical Gnaat chart... where periods in each 'group' cascade. What I am looking is 1 bar (or may be 2 to avoid the label overlap) per group (e.g. Role)

Please see my answers after ":"
- what really needs ... eg those colors? : Colors are not important, but would be nice to at least have alternating colors for various time periods
- is Your data always in that position : Data can be in a table or set of columns. Even the order is not important
- is Your 'output' always in that position? : No. output is a typical 'chart' object one can customize and move around

Overlapping --- if there will be those then this would need to do other way ... then 'maybe' would take care too.
Need --- need is need, eg nice to have would mean no need.
Data --- data should have fixed layout.
Output --- do it need to customize too? do it need to be 'chart' at all?
Do You still need an idea or something else?
To do this ... this way or that way ... it would take time ... others than Yours
... that's why - You need to know - what really needs?

@vletm Please see my request before -> in caps

YES -> Overlapping --- if there will be those then this would need to do other way ... then 'maybe' would take care too.
FIXED LAYOUT ->Data --- data should have fixed layout.
Chart YES but could be manipulated using script -> Output --- do it need to customize too? do it need to be 'chart' at all?

... with those Your request this would not be userfriendly
and
anyway it would take time to do ...
and
I'm not sure that it would be useful at all.
You should think one more second - what really needs?

Thanks @vletm. This is what I need. I can wait. Also exploring other options. Found a few but customizing them for my need. If I succeed, I will post it here to. Hopefully useful for others.

Seems that You didn't figure my message ...
Here 'my way' sample.
I tested only with Your data.

yes @vletm it was my mistake that I wrongly understood you. My apologies.

The sample you provided is exactly what I am looking for.

Please have a look at the modified file with Requests for the changes. This will make it more useful and extendable

hmm?
1st You wrote The sample you provided is exactly what I am looking for.
... and of course, with next sentence --- You would like to have some modifications ... hmm?
Did You really skip my #10 reply?
Did You skip the last line too?

... as You would figure - even any 'minor' modification would mean ... start from zero! ... seems not ...hmm?

I agree @vletm. It is like once you get what you want, then you want more :)

If not anything, at least the ability to add new 'Group' and completely visible Value text should be there.

If you are kind enough to unlock the script, I can attempt myself too.

EERS
As in the real life ... if the 1st sample is called as 'free' ... which is totally lie! ... what would be further parts?
... group ... I could check later ... maybe?
... visible ...
a) adjust wider the 1st year column before push that button
b) use longer periods
c) use shorter values

hi @vletm,
here is what I did on my own. Have a look. I only need help with position and size of individual shapes based on the dates in table.

In script it is commented as 'set shape position and size

Any help is appreciated.

No. I didn't skip anything. I appreciate all your efforts so far.

If you would like to stop this thread, I am OK with it.

Thanks
