Microsoft Celebrating Big Data Week...

Faseeh

I just came across the post on my facebook wall that MS has been celebrating "Big Data Week"..

You can find more here:

What's the consensus on Chandoo of "big data"? I'm still not convinced that big data is anything more than marketing nonsense, an attempt to repackage the same-old as something new and flashy. The same could probably be said for "business analytics/intelligence," which used to be called OLAP only three years ago.

Hi Jordan ,

You might be right ; Microsoft might be a wee bit silly , since their page title is :

Microsot Big Data Newsroom: Press Materials

This might be all hype and marketing but MS is moving, albeit at geological pace, towards making tools available for working with Bigger data sets

The move of Excel from 64k rows to 1.048M Row and the continued improvements in Tables and integration of Power Pivot into Excel 2013 being a few examples.

Like it or not there is lots more data available now and we now need the tools to deal with it.

My boss always says....Business is driven by data...although we have experienced people in the field...but still there are some (might be right) assumptions.....so data is a must...the more you have is beneficial...

Hi ,

Data is certainly important , but the best companies are not driven by data ; they are driven by age-old business tenets , and lots of common-sense ; in all this data madness , the companies which make the most money are the IT companies , not necessarily the companies which use the data.

Data consciousness is somewhat like advertising ; everyone agrees that it is not really necessary , but everyone promotes it ; a majority of the ads you see in the media are plain stupid , and yet which company will reduce its advertising budget ?

Ask any business tycoon whether he relies on business data ; yes , some amount of basic data is a must , but decisions are mostly taken when either data is insufficient or unreliable ; after all , if enough data is available to justify a decision , then any thinking person could create and run a business.

Every business is on the lookout for the next wave ; since this is in the future , what data will be available ? It is only your own intuition , and your confidence in yourself which can make you take the plunge and forge ahead where others fear to tread. And only time will tell whether your decision was right or wrong.

To me Big data seems like a lot of marketing hype. Data did not suddenly become big. It has always been like that. Somehow BI companies have figured that Big data is the term that would drive more sales...

See this recent piece by Stephen Few for more rant - http://www.perceptualedge.com/blog/?p=1349

Hi Chandoo,

After reading first few lines of Stephen Few's blog, i just realized you are right, it is a marketing tactic.

Faseeh

It definitely feels like marketing hype. Our datasets are definitely getting larger as Hui points out, but I don't think the way we analyze data has actually changed because of it.

By the way, I met Stephen Few a few weeks ago and got him to sign my copy of Information Dashboard Design.
