How to write a VLookup to find a number equal to or less than in the array?

The lookup_value I'm looking for is 38 in col. "A"

Excel returns 2-1/2" since the number 32 is the closest to 38...but I need it to return 3". How do I write a VLookup to look for the number equal to or less than in the array?


A B

1 1-1/4"

3 1-1/2"

16 2"

32 2-1/2"

48 3"

Try this.

=INDEX(B1:B5,MATCH(J3,A1:A5,1)+1)


Make sure your look value "38" is in cell J3.
