How to eliminate cell views across multiple columns

How do you eliminate when two cells are somehow tagged together on a spreadsheet? When we shade one cell, they both get shaded. Is this a format issue?
 
It sounds as if the Cells are Merged

To unmerge the cells click on the "Merge and Center" Button on the Formatting Toolbar to Toggle the Merge and Center off
