finding sum

dear all,
i want to find sum of the numbers that are coming before "*"
i.e 2*50+7*60+4*45.

here i need sum of 2,7,4.
what can be the formula.

Is your expression a formula with hard-wired constants (that evaluates to 700) or is it the text string ("2*50+7*60+4*45")?

IT IS A TEXT STRING

As it stands a named formula 'evalSUM' that refers to
=EVALUATE(SUBSTITUTE(string, "+","^0+")&"^0")
would return the value 14.
I can't help feeling that there is a bit more to this requirement than a single calculation.
