Excel 2007 keeps freezing/locking up/pausing

Since using Excel 2007 in compatibility mode for older spreadsheets it has had a problem. Even in a new blank workbook it will stop for about five seconds every ten seconds or so. When this happens I cannot move to another cell or see any data I have typed, when it starts again anything typed will appear in a cell and the input box will move to the next cell if return or an arrow has been pressed. This makes using Excel a slow painful process, the systems admin people here at work don't know what the problem is. Can anyone help please?

Have you added any new Addins or do any of your worksheets have any macro's

Try disabling any Non-standard Addins one at a time

Similarly with any macros in your personal.xlsx file if you have one.

Do any of the files have links to other files on Network Drives, have they moved or been renamed?

Try opening the file from a local directory c:...

Try the same files on another PC, do you get the same results?

If it is only a problem on yours it may be time for a re-install of Excel

Thanks for your suggestions which I have tried to no effect. I will have to get Excel reinstalled and see if that works.

Following on from Dan if you have too many Sumproducts or if they lookup too many very large ranges or if you have used many Data Table Functions the spreadsheet may be trying to recalculate

If that is the case it will show you a message in the lower status bar and advise what percentage complete it is

To fix this:

Reduce your dependancy on Sumproduct, try Sumifs in 2007+

Limit the number of Data Tables and Pivot Tables you use. Set 1 up execute and then copy/paste values before going onto the next.

If you use a lot of Offset formulas, change those to Index formulas

Also too many Conditional Formats especially in conjuction with the above may be slowing your machine down.
