Excel 2003 Radio Buttons - HELP!!!

Hello All, (sorry the spacing isn't working in the post!)


I need some help with my radio buttons (option buttons)I have researched some of the issues and am left one problem I cannot seem to get around. I am using Excel 2003. They are not behaving independently. Selecting one, auto selects another one in the same groupframe.


This is what the sheet looks like;


A B C D

Result Level 1 Level 2 Level 3

1 (Linked cell) Radio Button 1 Radio Button 2 Radio Button 3


Result Level 1 Level 2 Level 3

2 (Linked cell) Radio Button 1 Radio Button 2 Radio Button 3


I have inserted a group box to allow the separate rows of options buttons to have separate linked cells for the result to show. The result that appears in the linked cell is part of a next if function, so it still needed.


The problem is that when I select radio button 1 radio button 3 also "checks".


I have tried both the forms tool bar and the control box tool bar (and changed the groupname details) to try and help. Am completely stuck!!

Why are my option (radio)buttons allowing multiple selections in a groupbox? This is happening in both Forms and Controlbox options.

That is certainly an oddity. Have you tried recreating the buttons in a separate workbook? Or, perhaps you could upload a workbook (see 3rd sticky in this forum)?

Maybe both radio buttons share the same linked cell. Checked this?

If yes, perhaps you could upload a sample file. Read the first three green sticky topics at this forums main page for general guidelines.

PS: each time I feel more convinced that the "(x posts) (y voices" should have an extra "(z reading)"... maybe with that I'd look less like than an elephant in a bazaar :)

Do note, that the user's intent is for the group of radio buttons to all be linked to same cell. Normal operation would be that the cell then displays 1, 2, 3, etc. depending on which button has been selected. The described scenario sounds as if somehow both buttons are in separate groups (despite being grouped otherwise) and linked to same cell.


As for the z-reading idea, the only tip I can offer is that if I've had a thread open for awhile, or it's a longer post, I'll copy my response, and then refresh the page to see if anything new has come up. Just my two cents!

Weird in fact... Try this to create you radio buttons.

1. Create a groupbox

2. Insert one radio button inside the group box and link the cell

3. Hold CTRL and click on the radio button. While holding CTRL, drag your mouse to copy the radio button inside the group box (2 times)

4. Now HOLD CTRL and click on the group box and the 3 radio buttons and drag your mouse to copy them.

5. Set the linked cell for this second group by selecting one of the radio button of the second group.

6. Enjoy !


This is what I did and it worked.

Reading more carefully (in fact just carefully) what claudine wrote I notice I misunderstood what she clearly meant. I think I should get off the bike before reading :)

About z-reading, you're absolutely right, if I do that I won't be overstepping anymmore... but I should be wise, methodic and ordered! A bigger issue, I guess...

Hi Claudine ,


You can get what you want if you use the Forms control radio buttons. They are working correctly.


1. Insert a radio button from the Form control toolbox ; by default it will be Option Button 1.


2. Copy and paste this 5 times to get 6 option buttons in all. Change the captions if you want.


3. Select any one of the radio buttons and link it to any cell of your choice , say A1 ; automatically all the others will also get linked to $A$1


5. From the Forms control toolbox , select a Group Box , and insert it around the three option buttons of your choice.


6. Select any one of the option buttons within the Group Box and link it to any cell of your choice , say B1 ; automatically the others in the Group Box will also get linked to $B$1


7. Select any one of the other option buttons which are outside the Group Box ; if its linkage needs to be changed , link it to any cell of your choice , say C1 ; automatically the others outside the Group Box will also get linked to $C$1

Dear All,


First of all thank you for taking the time to help me on this.


Second of all, I have tried each of the suggestions and they all work in a fresh workbook. I think I was either adding the group box first and then putting the options into it, or the group box was too skinny and wasn't properly surrounding the option buttons!!!


I have followed the instructions here and joy-of-joys it works!!
