Embed Shockwave Flash to Excel.

Hello.

Newbie Here. Old to excel though. Had a simple question.

I recently got a mail from a friend which has a flash application embedded in it.

Its nearly of size 250KB in total.

Wanted to embed more flash files into excel, have finally got the steps.

I followed the below steps.

Task 1: To extract a SWF file from Internet explorer.

Step1:Get to internet options (start-->INETCPL.CPL in RUN and enter).

Step2:Under General Tab, click on "settings"(for Temp files) and then click on View files to view the temp content. Locate your flash file (of extension .swf) and then right click on it and select Copy, you can paste it in any location and rename it leaving the extension .swf.

Task 2: Getting it into Excel.(2007)

Step1: Get the Developers tab. (click on excel ribbon button, select excel options, Under "popular" section, click to check the "show developers tab in the ribbon" check box, hit ok and you'll see a developers tab.

Step2: Click on the developers tab, Click on "Insert" under Controls, And in that select an item called "more controls" (the bottom last one).

Step3: It'll bring up Control selection. Select "shockwave flash object". Hit OK.

Step4: Select an area, (click and drag) (the range where you want your flash movie or game to deploy) for the Flash App to launch.

Step5: You'll see a square box with X in it. Right click on it and select properties.

Step6: Select the EMBEDMOVIE option "true", Paste your .SWF file path under MOVIE.

Step7: You just need to click on "design mode" button under "controls", Save and Exit

Step8: You are done. You can watch the flash movie/Game now.

Here comes the problem.

I donno where I'm doing wrong. I want this file created as standalone file without it depending upon the source, when I lookup the properties of the excel file after the completion, I see it only to be 22 KB which is much less than the flash original app 322KB.

When I change the source SWF file, I get a blank page. So, it would be greatly appreciated if any of you can enlighten me with the step that I'm missing to create a standalone excel file with embedded flash object which doesn't depend upon the source.

Thanks.

Thank you so much for sharing the technique Manzoor. I have written about this on blog too. You should see it live by today evening.

I think you are saving files in compatible mode. Try saving the workbook in Excel 2007 version (.xlsx) and re-open. The flash object should be embedded.

@ Luke...

I see that the same method goes in for Excel 2003, Didn't actually work it out though, but it should go as per my research.

@ Chandoo...

Thanks for responding....

I've tried to save it as a .xlsx file, it still would'nt be a standalone Excel File, It works great until we move the source. Please try to change the source (I've downloaded the SWF to desktop and gave the path, later to test it, i've changed the SWF file location which deactivated the Excel file).
