define lookup reference functions

hello, i've just joined office n startd using excel.i understand vlookup & hlookup but i don't have a clue when to use the other functions,so i was wondering can anyone explain When is a "lookup","index","indirect","Offset","Match","Row" & "Rows" function is used.as you can sense i already went through microsoft help guide & its too complicated for me.
