Date Lookup

I have worksheet of projects with dates that represent effective dates and I'm trying to get the closest install date from a column range of established install dates without going past. Basically I need to fill the cell next to the effective dates with the closest install date. Probably need a formula but I don't know how...

Example:

Effective Date...Install Date...IT INSTALL DATES

...10/07/10.....(s/b 10/03/10)....09/26/10

...10/13/10.....(s/b 10/10/10)....10/03/10

...10/16/10.....(s/b 10/10/10)....10/10/10

...10/18/10.....(s/b 10/17/10)....10/17/10

...11/06/10.....(s/b 10/31/10)....10/24/10

...11/07/10.....(s/b 11/07/10)....10/31/10

...11/10/10.....(s/b 11/07/10)....11/07/10

I appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks, Jeanne

I'm not quite clear on what you're trying to do.

What is the difference between the "Install Date" and the "closest install date"?

Ok maybe I get this:

You have a list of 'delivery dates' and a list of 'possible install dates'. You want to determine what is the best install date for your delivery date, without going over.

Am I right?
