Correlation Question

Hi,

I have recently returned from a field trip where some 280 soil samples were taken and then analysed.

With the given analysis I would like to be able to see if there is any correlation between Manganese(Mn)and the other mineral elements which also showed up in the analysis.

Given that the data is just numbers in columns, I'm not sure if correlation can even be done, or is a scatter-gram or something else the way to go?

My file is http://www.mediafire.com/?jywyon2ktzh on Sheet 2

Cheers

You can use either a scatter chart or statistics to examine the regressions between Mn and the other elements

The charts give a quick visual representation, where statistics give a quantitative analysis, of the correlation

Hi Hui,

Thanks Hui I will have to read up on that because I'm not sure how to do it?

When I put all those columns into the scatter chart for whatever reason Mn never shows on the chart?

Cheers

You probably should discuss what are you trying to achieve with geologists from your organisation who has knowledge of what your trying to do.

Otherwise have a read of Statistical Correlation Tutorials or Basic Statistics on the web.

As an asisde Mn won't show up on the Scatter Chart as you will be plotting all the other elements against Mn to see what relationships there may be. A plot of Mn vs Mn will be a straight line.

Also be careful of posting corporate data on the web as once you have done so, it is available for all to see. Make sure you randomise the data first.
