convert roman numerals to numbers

Can the shorter version of this formula be done? Without using a macro?

And also how can we add currency or currency symbol?

(I apologize my English is bad.)

I can't find the English language version that I wrote but the attached shows it modified to accommodate French.

try below formula and drag

=MATCH(A2,INDEX(ROMAN(ROW(INDIRECT("1:3999"))),0),0)

* 3999 because in excel Roman function support till 3999 only.

Since this thread has come to life, I have also constructed a (complex) solution using Excel 365 beta. I did this by using a recursive Lambda function.


To invoke the Lambda function one uses formulae of the type


[the attached file is a macro file because there is a VBA utility to upload the Lambdas to Name Manager]

The way Excel is developing, we may soon reach the point at which the fact that it also implements the conventional spreadsheet paradigms is a mere curiosity for the traditionally minded.
