Changing Cell Colours

Good day Everyone.
I would like to be able to change cell colours so that when certain letters are entered the cell changes to the appropriate colour. They will be connected with the weekly sales so the letters entered will be P=profit,L=loss,E=even.so the formula will look something like this.
A--------B----------C---
Person---Amount---Result
Jane -----£1765----E cell colour blue
Dave-----£876------L--red
Mark -----£2487----P--green
I hope I have made this clear its my Boss who wants this done it makes it easier for him to see the profit and loss quicker apparently. Many thanks for your valuable time.

Hi oldchippy Many thanks for that but I am using Letters "E","L","P" so when I enter the letter I want the cell to change to the colour "E" blue, "L" red, "P" green will thatwork with this formula?
Mike

I assume you want to attibute the collor to Cell D3 and that the criteria
E, L or P was in D4

but generally Go on the cell you want to format

On the home tab go to the conditional fomula button, on the small arrow at the bottom, New Rule
Rule type: Use a formula to determine which cells to format
=D4="e" and set the background color you want as format

make this 3 times with 3 different colors
=D4="e"
=D4="l"
=D4="p"

Thats it ! Hope you like it !

Hi oldchippy

Maybe you noticed that you can enter either e or E to get the conditionnal formatting applied
