cannot convert text to numbers

Hi all ,
i have an excel where one column is like this:

EUR 203.86
EUR 211.21
EUR 214.55
EUR 214.55

I would like to turn this column to numbers.
Since i am newbie in excel (but not lazy) i searched in google and tried various stuff that is suggested but nothing seems to work.

This is very strange to me because it does not seem a so difficult task to do and yet all these suggestions fail.

So i came here to the experts to ask my humble question.

Any heads up will be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time reading this.

Regards,
the_observer.

Try Data - Text to columns - Checked "fixed width" - Next - Next - Select the first column and check " do not import" - Finish
(there are other ways)

Thank you very much for your replies.

I tried these yet the cells are not converting.

It is very weird that excel cannot do a so simple task so must be me doing something not right.

I attach a sample of the file so you can see on your own if you wish.

Regards.

Hi ,

The basic point is that the data has a Custom format applied.

See the attached file for a extracted set of values in column D ; to these values a General format has been applied. You can apply a Currency format to these values if you want.

Hi, the_observer!
You're using comma "," as decimal point, that's why you can't proceed neither as pecoflyer nor bosco_yip suggested you. Try changing the decimal point assignment temporarily to dot "." and check what happens.
Regards!

Hi again and sorry for the late response.

Thank you all for your answers.

It seems the problem was that i had decimal points "," as SirJB7 said and by changing that the Text to columns works ok.

Before i change the decimal point symbol the "lens" which narayak suggested worked also.

One more time i am again very impressed about the knowledge on Excel that Chandoo Excel Ninjas have.

Regards.
