Behavior Of Hyperlinked Files Upon Opening

Hello, all! I've noticed a behavior pattern with Word and Excel which annoys me and I have been so far unable to find out if there's anything I can do to make it stop. Allow me to elucidate:

I have a number of Word documents which describe various reporting functions I perform. Many of those workflow documents contain hyperlinks to the Excel files I need to use (because why manually navigate to open the file when you can open it in one easy click?).

What irritates me is that when I open an Excel file this way, it will open precisely on top of the Word document with the same dimensions on the screen; I have a dual monitor configuration, and it will even move Excel from the right screen to the left. When this happens, I have to move and resize the Excel file so that I can read the instructions on my left monitor while working in Excel on my right monitor.

The same thing happens in cases where an Excel file contains a hyperlink to a Word document. I haven't noticed the behavior with any other applications, so I assume it's a Microsoft Office thing. By the way, I'm running Office 2007 on a Windows XP machine.

I've looked in both applications' Settings to see if there was something I could check or uncheck to discontinue this behavior, but have had no luck. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Hmm, I am not able to duplicate that condition (dual monitor use, both applications already open, clicked on word to excel link, and a excel to word link). I'm even running same setup, 2007 on XP. Just a wild shot, are you using a laptop or desktop? :-/

Good day Wookiee

I know the USA government is part shutting down due to a shortage of monies.....but I see there is a shortage of razor blades as well......:p

Thanks, bobhc! Although I would prefer to handle the issue specifically when a hyperlinked file is opened, I will certainly try to play around with that Application Event Handler code if I can find no other solution.

And as for razors, those are things which I am aware exist, but rarely do I allow one to come in contact with me. Much to my wife's chagrin.

:D

Do you have the applications maximized when you click the link? I was able to duplicate your problem when the app being opened was not maximised.

It acts as I described regardless of whether the source file with the hyperlink is maximized or regular sized (although the hyperlinked file opens on the opposite monitor).

Wait...I thought that that is what you wanted? Or am I misunderstanding?

Luke, I appreciate your help and suggestions and I apologize that I wasn't clear in my original statement.

While your proposed method of calling the hyperlinked file from a maximized source file does put each application up on opposite screens, I would prefer to not have either of the applications maximized. That's just me being anal, I guess, but I like to keep fixed positions for my commonly-used applications so I can keep an eye on my inbox in Outlook, pull data from Crystal Reports, and of course, see when I've gotten replies from the Excel Ninjas at Chandoo.org.

;)

Hi, my friend!
Good evening.
Regarding bold -which is mine- that's not a justification and even less an excuse, it's just a little imagination, a lack of creativity... if it were so, we should have fully shutdown in 1975, 1984, 1991, 2001, 2009, and since then every year, and since this year every month, and since this month...
BTW I don't remember, if I ever knew, where it was coined the expression creativity accounting, if there weren't our CPN (in english CPA)...
Regards!

God evening SirJB7

I am not an accountant but I do find it a mystery how around the world governments can tax their people until they squeak....and then say they have no monies to pay the service's the people have paid for ??????
