Base Line On Line Graph

Good morning all,

Firstly I love the new forum!

I am having a problem with a line graph I am creating. Basically, I am creating a line graph to track costs for certain items. What I need is to be able to create a straight line that will always sit at £10,000 on the line graph.

So if an item goes above this cost, I can easily identify it because it will be above the line.

Other than drawing a line with the line tool (which can be moved) I cant seem to find a way to do it? Can anyone help?

Many thanks

Hi Mike ,

One way , which is straightforward , is to use named ranges.

Suppose your data is in a range named Data_Range ; create another named range called Baseline , and define it using the following formula :

=ROW(Data_Range)*0+10000

Now , use this as another series in your chart.

Thanks very much for your reply Narayank, however when I put this into my spreadsheet, the point only appears on the vertical axis, does not appear across the length of the line graph?

Hi Mike ,

If your data is across columns , in one row , change the definition of the named range Baseline to :

=COLUMN(Data_Range)*0+10000

Perfect! This is what i was after, that is to place a solid line at a desired point.

My question is (sorry, im new to excel 2010), but in the example sheet above, i cannot find where the'=Example_Mike.xlsx!Baseline' is located? Please help.

oops!
Sorry for the confusion, the flat horizontal line is fine, but im trying to place a vertical line that shows todays date or a specified date.
