Area to the left of row numbers

Just ran across a workbook that has an area to the left of the row numbers which has to buttons numbered 1 and 2 and beneath them are 3 plus signs. When you select the number 2 all of the hidden rows will be displayed or you can individually select any of the plus signs. I haven't seen this capability before and cannot figure out how it is done. Can anyone help with this? Thanks

It's called Grouping. It can also be achieved by using the SubTotal feature, but in a slightly different manner. If you are using Office 2007+, you should find this in the Data tab.
