Adding $ and decimal in data

Can not get $ or decimal to work in entering data. Have highlighted column and hit format cell and chose first accounting. What have I done wrong?

Try selecting just your data instead of the whole column

If you are copying and pasting your data in, just try copy > paste values

Highlight column, Ctrl + Shift + $ - I hope this works!
