Unable to copy and paste large formulated cells in excel

When I try to copy and paste large formulated cells in excel the following error messgae comes up.

'Excel cannot complete this task with the available resources. Choose less data or close other applications'

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can overcome this issue?

Thanks for the advice on where to look. Have read through most of it and nothing appears to apply to my specific case directly. I'm only working on a spreadsheet with 6 sheets with less than 200 rows and 100 columns!

Will keep on reading and see if I can find out what the problem is.
