Worksheet protection question

I was asked to protect certain cells in a worksheet, so that the users cannot manipulate the formula or overwrite them. That was easy.

But then I was also asked to make the worksheet flexible enough to allow the users to hide rows and columns. I'm using MS 2007 and I have tried with no success. The only way I can come up with is not to protect the worksheet if the users want the flexibility to hide certain columns and rows; and add a comment or Input Message under data validation telling user no alternation is allowed on that cell when that cell is chosen.

I cannot find a way to protect the said cell while at the same time allowing the users to hide/show rows and columns (Note: many of the columns and rows are "grouped").

Question: can Excel 2007 protect cells from alteration and let users show/hide rows and columns?

At least in 2003, hiding/unhiding fell under the "allow Format rows/columns" option. Is there a similar option you can enable in 2007 when you protect the worksheet?

Thanks Luke M. I can do that. However, is there a way to let the users to click the "+" and "-" button to hide/unhide, instead of hi-lighting the rows/columns when the protection is on?

Sadly, no. Microsoft did not give an option to allow the outline tools to work (which is a mistake, in my opinion). =(
