Working with Templates and Template protection

Hi, I am new to this board, but I have a question. I am trying to create a template that can be used widely where I work at. Idealistically, there should be a file that can just open and create a new file. Like, if I have my co-worker open it, then a new file is created with a "1" at the end. However, it doesn't always work, and some can open up the original file and the template is made vulnerable. I have pondered just protecting the lines that dont need to be changed by anybody else and putting a password to that. Then, if somebody opens the original file, then it can't be changed. Is there any way that I can make it so that it consistently opens up a brand new file and nobody gets to touch the original file?

The read-only option would work nicely (or save it so that you need a password to write to it). If you want to stick w/ template idea, you need to save as .xlt (.xltx if 2007)

Thanks for the feedback, but there is another dimension of this situation. I set up the template in a share drive. But, the read only item is not an option because I want people to be able to fill it out, and there is no way it can be updated and emailed if it is read only, and the formulas dont work in read only. If anybody can prove otherwise let me know, but those were my findings. Idealistically, when you open the template, a new file with the same name and a number 1 at the end comes up, but that doesn't always happen. Some computers (including my own) get to the original file, some do the new file. Is there any way I can make it so everybody only gets to the new file if they try to open it?

How about a combination of both? Open the template file (so you could edit it normally), and when you go to save it, set it with a .xlt extension AND under Tools-options (from the save dialogue) set it to have a password to modify. This way, the normal user "should" just open up a regular file (with 1 at the end), but if they accidentally cause the template itself to open, they'll get stopped by the password check.
