why is Excel cutting off my numbers at the decimal? (not column width problem)

hello all - great web site! i've been google searching an issue i am having w/ Excel, which usually works. but not this time! :) ok so my problem is this:

under a certain column on my spreadsheet, when i enter let's say "103.16" and hit return, the number shows 103. the ".16" is NOT cut off value-wise (just cosmetically), because it becomes visible if i double-click its cell, and is also visible in the horizontal "fX" field on the top of the sheet when i mouse over. and this is isn't even a problem on the whole column, because cells let's say 1-100 show decimals. but starting at let's say 101, everything below in this certain column cuts off the decimals. it isn't rounding the number. it's just not showing the aforementioned ".16".

(not a column width problem, as columns are plenty wide and i've experimented with this.)

if anyone has any insight into this, would be much appreciated. thank you so much for reading!

Hi

Did you look at the format of the column, it may be formatted to no decimals.

You can check this by selecting the column and right-click, go to "Format Cells" and make sure of the setting.

Hi, westcoastaccounting!

It seems to be a problem of cell formatting. If you select a cell that shows 103.16 and other displaying 103., and press Ctrl-1 en each, do you see the same format?

Do you have any macros or VBA code that may alter cell formats from within the code?

If you choose a blank cell and type =ROUND(A1,6)=ROUND(A2,6) (replace both cell references for those of the example) do you get a TRUE or a FALSE? Used 6 decimals to avoid Excel rounding issues and to give your data more decimals.

Despite of this, could you upload the file so as to check it?

See the three green sticky posts at this forums main page for guidelines.

THANK YOU so much kchiba and sirjb7! as it turns out kchiba's right-click solution solves this problem, but i'm copying both replies to use for future reference, as i'm sure i'll be having similar issues in the future. (have been working off a complex spreadsheet with multiple formulas, so weirdness has abounded.) once again, much appreciated! i only wish there was an efficient forum like this for all problems: auto/computer/home/etc. :)

Hi, westcoastaccounting!

Glad you solved it and thanks for the feedback. Welcome back whenever needed or wanted!
